Mylor Heritage Society is presenting - “History from below: a new perspective on Mylor Bootmaker's Shop” On 19th May 2013 at 3pm
At Mylor Cotton Memorial Hall, Cnr Cross St. and Strathalbyn Road, Mylor
A talk by Dr. Ann Herraman, President of the Mt Lofty District Historical Society.
History was often regarded as solely a matter of what the powerful, the famous, and the wealthy thought and did. It was "history from above." What ordinary people felt and what they tried to accomplish was regarded as insignificant, not even worth regarding as part of history. “History from below” is concerned with ordinary people who are interested in the past of their families, communities, and organizations. History, appropriately presented, can find a wide audience when it addresses matters which concern ordinary people.
Entry $2 donation. Afternoon tea available.

Bootmaker's Project - Progress report
- Hits: 592
Progress on the restoration of the old Mylor Bootmaker’s Shop has been very good; we expect to have the job largely complete by the end of May. The finishing touches are:
-
- The walls - Heritage Stone Restorations (HSR) pulled out all the stops to help us - rendering external walls and chimney and will be repeating the process inside the shop
- The roof - Brian Woodlands and Phil Davill have fitted the barge boards and fascias, allowing the roofer get on with replacing the roof, making the building weatherproof
- The windows - Phil has cut the glass ready for the two front windows The painting - Scott Rickards will be painting the timberwork
- The hearth and threshold - HSR will be supplying slate for the threshold and hearth The door - Brian will reconstruct the door frame and hang the door
- The floor – Richard Fidock will be cutting 100mm thick rounds of red-gum to be used for the floor
- The hessian - Janet Davill and Jill Monroe have been beavering away for many weeks, repairing holes in the hessian lining; this job has been particularly difficult because of the weight of all the flour bags that Johnnie Staples so neatly sewed together, and the resistance of the hessian to the bagging needles The furniture – all that is still in storage will be returned.
